*MARWAN AL SHAQAB

Scottsdale, 2012

The great Al Shaqab stallion *Marwan Al Shaqab has won national championships on three continents and has been the leading Halter sire at Scottsdale, the U.S. National Championships and the World Championships (Paris) numerous times over the past five years. Of all the Arabian stallions currently or previously standing in the World today, his is the most impressive, utterly global record, particularly when taking into account that he has half the number of offspring of his most immediate rivals. At the 2012 Scottsdale Show 19 *Marwan Al Shaqab offspring were shown successfully to 5 championships, 2 reserve championships, 8 Top Ten awards, 8 first place awards, four seconds and a sixth in Halter and performance.

The first weekend’s evenings at the Scottsdale show are dedicated to the International Halter classes where they utilize a version of the European judging system. The splendid *Abha Myra (x ZT Ludjkalba) won the International 7 & Older Halter Mares and then went on to take the Gold and be named Scottsdale International Senior Champion Mare. A 9-year-old, *Abha Myra was the U.S. Reserve National Champion Junior Halter Mare in 2006. The lovely Fai Al Shaqab (x *Victoria II HPS) was second in the International Halter Fillies (junior division) and then took the Bronze in the International Junior Filly Championship. Marauderr (x CJ Psymphony) was second in the 5 & 6-year-Old Stallions, Oula Aljazzimya (x El Sanadika IA) was Top Ten in the 2-Year-Old Halter Filies and RA Marwans Elygance (x RA Cool Elygance US) was Top Ten in the 3 & 4-Year-Old Halter Mares.

The open Classic Halter classes adjudicated later during the ten days of the Scottsdale show are considered to be among the toughest Arabian Halter competitions in the world. There, *Marwan Al Shaqab was even more impressive as a sire. Leading the way was his son Aria Impresario (x GC Echlectica), winner of the 6 & 7-Year-Old Stallions and the Senior Stallion Halter Championship (both unanimously). Aria Impresario then went on to win the Scottsdale Supreme Champion title for the second time (having also won it in 2007), the only horse to ever win that title twice. Aria Impresario was the U.S. National Champion Junior Halter Stallion in 2009 and the U.S. National Champion Yearling Sweepstakes Colt in 2007. At the tender age of six, with just three foal crops on the ground, Aria Impresario was also the winner of the 2012 Scottsdale Get of Sire class. Winner of the Scottsdale 4-Year-Old Stallion class and Reserve Champion Senior Stallion was Baahir El Marwan (x HB Bessolea). Baahir El Marwan made his show ring debut at the 2009 Scottsdale show where he won the Yearling Colts (senior division) and was unanimous Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt. A full brother to the 2010 Salon du Cheval Senior Champion Stallion and All Nations Cup winner, Baanderos, Baahir El Marwan’s youngest sister, Bessolina El Marwan, was the Region 9 Champion Filly last year and the winner of three Top Ten awards at the 2011 U.S. National Championships.

As if these special wins were not enough, *Marwan Al Shaqab was also the sire of *Hariry Al Shaqab (x White Silkk) winner of the Scottsdale Classic 2-Year-Old Halter Colts (junior division) and the 2012 Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt, as well as Miss Marwan PA (x Miss Amerika), winner of the Scottsdale Classic Yearling Halter Fillies (senior division) and the 2012 Scottsdale Reserve Junior Champion Filly. Patriciaa (x Patrina De Parys), who came to Scottsdale undefeated with four Class A Halter Championships to her credit, won the important 3-Year-Old Classic Halter Mares. Sir Marwan CRF (x Ames Mirage) stepped up to win the 3-Year-Old Classic Halter Stallions. Sir Marwan CRF was the Region 10 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt last summer and the 2011 U.S. National Reserve Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.

GC Amarige (x GC Echlectica), full sister to Aria Impresario, was second in the 4-Year-Old Classic Halter Mares and Mari Belle MP (x Magic Kisses) was third (Top Ten). Aria Marchestra (x GC Merpsydita) was second in the 5-year-Old Classic Halter Mares. The beautiful WH Patriot (x WH Rosette), an exceptional stallion with the unfortunate luck to be born the same year as Aria Impresario, has stood second to that super show horse annually, first as the Scottsdale Reserve Junior Champion Colt, then as the U.S. Reserve National Champion Yearling Sweepstakes Colt, etcetera. This year he had not one, but two, former Scottsdale Supreme Champions in his class, Aria Impresario and Semper Fie, and so had to settle for third (Top Ten). Also making a fine appearance in Halter at the Scottsdale show were Badiaa Al Shahania (x Majalis) a Top Ten in the Classic Yearling Halter Fillies (senior division) and Saudi Sahara (x OFW Emmalee), Top Ten in the Classic 2-Year-Old Halter Fillies (senior division).

Although obviously a superstar as a Halter sire, *Marwan Al Shaqab has had good performance offspring in the national arena since they were old enough to saddle. Notables at this year’s Scottsdale show included PA Marco (x Cassandra SS), winner of the coveted SSS Western Pleasure Futurity Championship (3 & 4-Year-Olds) and Nadir Ibn Marwan (x WH So Rare), a Top Ten in the Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse Championship.

At the 2011 Salon du Cheval in December *Marwan Al Shaqab was Leading Sire for the fifth year running, siring the Junior Champion Male and the Junior Champion Female, as well as both the Senior Champion and Reserve Senior Champion Male. In the 60 to 70 years that Arabian horses have been exhibited in the United States and globally, no other Arabian stallion has ever garnered the numbers or the qualifications to make claim to such international dominance in the Arabian horse show ring. It is an unprecedented coup and a unique moment in history for owner-breeder Al Shaqab, and manager-trainer, Michael Byatt, of Michael Byatt Arabians in Houston, Texas.

*Marwan Al Shaqab is the son of 2005 U.S. Reserve National Champion Stallion, Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora by Kaborr) out of the 1990 Canadian National Champion Futurity Filly and 1991 U.S. Reserve National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse, Little Liza Fame (Fame VF x Katahza by Aza Destiny). Foaled in 2000, he was World Champion Colt and Qatari National Champion Colt as a yearling. At two he was again World Champion Colt and added Nations Cup Champion Colt and European Champion Colt to his credentials. In 2003 and 2005 he was unanimous U.S. National Champion Junior Halter Stallion.
Though no stranger to the Leading Sire listing, *Marwan Al Shaqab has begun to feature prominently as a Leading Halter Sire at the U.S. National Championships. At the 2009 Scottsdale Show, *Marwan Al Shaqab sons and daughters won four champion-ships, a reserve championship and 33 Top Ten titles, in addition to seven first place, five second place and one sixth place awards. All of the prizes were in Halter competition except the sixth place ribbon which went to OFW Balvenie (x OFW Balarina) in Western Pleasure Junior Horse (3 & 4-Year-Old).

Baahir El Marwan (x HB Bessolea) won the Yearling Senior Colt Halter class and went on to be named Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt. FC Kool Jazz (x Kleopatra Jullyen V) won the Yearling Gelding Halter class and was the 2009 Scottsdale Junior Champion Halter Gelding. Forever Fleurtatious (x Crysstal Echo) won the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Two-Year-Old Filly Championship and was second in the Two-Year-Old Senior Halter Filly class, while Matisse FM (x Selket Promise Kept) was Champion Senior Halter Stallion AAOTH, won the Stallion Halter 3 & 4-Year-Old AAOTH class and was a Top Ten in the Three-Year-Old Colt Halter class. Aria Impresario (x GC Echlectica) won the Three-Year-Old Colt Halter class and was the 2009 Scottsdale Reserve Senior Champion Stallion.

*Marwan Al Shaqab offspring that won more than one Top Ten include Markayca DFA (x Kayce Andra) who took her titles in the Two-Year-Old Halter Filly AAOTH and the Two-Year-Old Senior Halter Fillies, El Molok (x *Maya El Jamaal) in Two-Year-Old Colt Halter AAOTH and in the SSS Two-Year-Old Colt Championship ATH, Elan MM (x MM Exquisite) in both the open Five-Year-Old Stallion Halter and the Stallion Halter 5 & Older AAOTH, and MCA Prince Marwan (x MCA Eternal Secret) who won Top Ten awards in the Stallion Halter 3 & 4-Year-Old AAOTH and the Three-Year-Old Colt Halter class.

Individual Top Ten awards went to Annjolina (x MFA Annies Song) in the SSS Yearling Filly Championship, Madam Marwan WCF (x RA Sheiklani) and Mari Belle MP (x Magic Kisses) in the Yearling Senior Halter Fillies, TR Mercury (x TR Nastassia) in the Yearling Junior Halter Colts, Mojito TA (x Mirrakesch) in the SSS Two-Year-Old Colt Championships ATH, Song of Marwan AF (x Psylaila AF) in the SSS Two-Year-Old Filly Championships ATH, Aria Marchestra (x GC Merpsydita) in Two-Year-Old Senior Halter Fillies, Casanova PPA (x Carlinosaa) in Two-Year-Old Senior Halter Colts, S Rhapsody (x S Just Dream On) in the Two-Year-Old Junior Halter Fillies, Martell (x Medalion) in the Two-Year-Old Halter Geldings, GH Marwana (x Verona RA) and Marwan Cristal RCA (x Crysstell) in Three-Year-Old Halter Fillies, GW Marvella (x GG Gwen) and TS Mystical Marwan (x TA Silver Mist) in Mare Halter 3 & 4-Year-Olds AAOTH, and Marwans Debut (x Thee Paris Debut) in Stallion Halter 3 & 4-Year-Olds AAOTH.

Marcassin BA (x R Imagination), OFW Mariachi (x OFW Balarina), WH York (x WH Moneca Ren), and Maserati WR (x Aristokayate) were all Top Ten in the Three-Year-Old Halter Colts, along with the previously mentioned Matisse FM and MCA Prince Marwan, the second placed winner WH Patriot mentioned below, and of course, the class winner, Aria Impresario. There were only two stallions NOT sired by *Marwan Al Shaqab in this class and one of them was sired by his sire Gazal Al Shaqab. What a sweep.
Hukam MAJ (x Dinama) won the Four-Year-Old Stallions, RHR Marcedes (x Ellegant Dream) was second and five other “Marwan” sons were all in the Top Ten, including Giaccomo (x G Shamaal), Marjestic WA (x Miraga WA), Marquee IA (x Kaiynda Special), Mezmarize (x Uptown Fame), RA Karwan (x Karalisa). To underscore the impact of *Marwan Al Shaqab in that particular class, only three stallions in the Top Ten were NOT sired by him.
Among others who stood particularly well in very competitive Scottsdale classes was Perignon (x Psychic Karma) winner of the Two-Year-Old Junior Halter Colts and RA Nefertiti (x Maggie Mae PGA) who won the Two-Year-Old Senior Halter Fillies. WH Patriot (x Vanity Ffair) was second in the Three-Year-Old Halter Colts, NYN Hisani (x NYN Imara Versace) was second in the Five-Year-Old Stallion Halter, and Marwa Al Shaqab (x Majarani) was second in the Yearling Senior Halter Fillies.
